Daily Reading: Hebrews 1-6

Hebrews 1:1

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

What a way to start a book! It reminds us of other bombastic statements that draw readers into the subject matter at hand. In the beginning God… (Genesis 1:1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1) The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him… (Revelation 1:1) Boom! The books begin.

Amazingly, these books do not disappoint for the big statement that begins them is supported throughout. Each of these books, and all the books of the Bible contain powerful, relevant, and pinpointed truths that challenge the mind, penetrate the heart, and pierce the soul of the careful reader. Hebrews sure does.

This book brings forth many topics for discussion. Not the least is, “Who wrote it?” Frankly, no one knows. Any conjecture of such is simply that, conjecture. But even more frankly, if that is possible, who wrote the book does not matter. The bigger issue is the subject of the book which is Jesus Christ. In its chapters Jesus is proven to be superior to the angels, the Levitical priesthood, and even to the sacrifices. You see, not too long after this book was given Jerusalem would be totally destroyed by the Romans thereby ending the sacrificial animal sacrifices in the Temple. This book prepared the Jewish believers in Christ to understand that those sacrifices were no longer needed.

In short, Hebrews is a book about the Eternal High Priest of the Christian faith: the Lord Jesus Christ. Because of its decidedly Jewish flare, this is sometimes a difficult book for us to understand today. But know this, there is truth in this book for you. The Lord will bring to your attention that which you need. Rest in this, you may not understand it all, but the part you need to understand you will understand. With that said, this book must be interpreted in light of all Scripture, that is the only way to protect against forming false doctrine on a singular passage. And this will we do, if God permit. (Hebrews 6:3) So just read the book and trust the Lord to feed your soul. It is a wonderful book; in my estimation every single verse could be developed into a message. That would be 303 messages from one book. A man could preach once a day for almost a year from this book and that would just scratch the surface of all that it relates.

So, until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
