Daily Reading: I Timothy 1-6
I Timothy 3:15
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to Timothy as part of his training for ministry. It should be studied over and over again by both ministers of the Gospel and members of churches. In this letter Paul gives a brief statement that speaks volumes. He said that a church is not only the house of God, but also the pillar and ground of the truth. This is why enemies of Christ do all they can to diminish the influence of any church.
It is the pillar of the truth. A pillar holds up the building. In a physical building there may be many pillars, but the Apostle says that the church is the pillar. The singular pillar that upholds truth. No other institution on earth is ordained of Almighty God to uphold His truth than the local church.
Not only is the church the pillar of the truth, but it is also the ground of the truth. Meaning it is the foundation of truth. Truth is not built on this foundation; the foundation is truth. Everything that is built thereon is built on truth.
Today we are increasingly being told that our world is entering into the “post truth era”. But, frankly, truth is truth and will always be truth. It can be ignored, rejected, maligned, ridiculed, and censured. But it is still truth, and it is still to be upheld, distributed, propagated, and lived in and through local churches.
Jesus said something amazing about truth to Pilate, recorded in John 18:37. …Jesus answered, Thou sayest, that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice Pilate’s response: …What is truth? Which is the question of questions today. What is truth? According to Jesus Christ He bore witness to the truth. Look at Him, study His Words, consider His actions, and you will learn truth. After all, according to Jesus He is the Truth (John 14:6).
However, this is not a treatise about truth, it is a reminder that your church is the pillar and ground of that truth. Want to know truth? Want to learn truth? Want to walk in truth? Then go to the pillar and ground of the truth. Attend every service of your Bible believing church that preaches and teaches truth. For please know this; there is a difference between someone’s version of the truth and truth. Herein be careful.
So, until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
