Daily Reading: Isaiah 28-30

Isaiah 30:10

Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

God warns Judah about making an alliance with Egypt for protection against the Assyrians. They did not listen. In chapter 30 of his prophecy Isaiah gives God’s written denunciation of their folly. The Lord God lists 10 grievances against His people.

1. They are rebellious, vs. 9a

2. They lie, vs 9b

3. They will not hear the Law of the Lord, vs. 9c

4. They command the seers to see not, vs 10a

5. They command the prophets to prophesy not, vs. 10b

6. They command that only smooth things are spoken to them, vs. 10c

7. They command the prophet to prophesy deceits, vs. 10d

8. They tell the faithful to get out of the way, vs. 11a

9. They tell the faithful to turn aside from them, vs. 11b

10. They want to cause the Holy One of Israel to cease before them, vs. 11c

Because of their rejection of Him, the Lord God pronounces that they will be broken, vs. 12-14. As it is always with the Lord, He offers a promise of safety and comfort to those who would return to Him; Isaiah 30:15 For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: but yet, as is the case most often, He adds the truth about backslidersand ye would not.

This is a serious and sad portion of Isaiah’s prophecy. God’s people cease to trust Him, believe Him, or live according to His laws. Therefore, judgment falls. In their free will they left Him, though He pleads with them to return.

It’s been said that “Those who do not learn from history are prone to repeat it.” The 10 accusations the Lord lays at the feet of His people read like today’s headlines. Let it not be so with us, dear Lord, let it not be so with us.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
