Daily Reading: Lamentations 1-2

Lamentations 1:16

For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.

You have probably heard that Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet. This verse proves it. He wept, not for himself and the many injustices he endured but rather for Judah, Jerusalem, and Israel.

Lamentations is his ode to Judah. Some have called this book “The wailing wall of the Bible.” As you read Lamentations consider this thought, a pastor pastors a church for forty years (the span of Jeremiah’s ministry). In that forty years the pastor continually warns his flock about the awful results of sin. Yet, at the end, the flock is destroyed through the results of sin in their lives. That which the pastor gave his life to avoid becomes a reality. How brokenhearted a man would be to love, care, watch over, warn, and teach for forty years to see those he has warned be overcome at the end! This is exactly that which Jeremiah experienced. But it wasn’t a church, it was a nation.

While reading Lamentations take it as it is meant to convey, a sad postmortem of a nation that was once the apple of God’s eye.
