Daily Reading: Jeremiah 30-31

Jeremiah 30:9

But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.

While reading through the books of the prophets it is an overwhelming comfort to read so much about the coming Christ. In chapter 30 of the book of Jeremiah there is a primary and secondary promise of restoration given to Israel. In 536 B.C. Cyrus the Great, King of Persia, decreed that the Jews could return to their homeland. This ended 70 years of captivity in Babylon, just as Jeremiah had prophesied (Jeremiah 25:11, 29:10). The events spoken of in Jeremiah 30 were partially fulfilled in this “restoration.”

Yet, Jeremiah simultaneously also spoke of another day. A day when Israel would serve their King David. He had been dead for over 400 years (970 B.C.). Many think of this as one thing, others interpret it as another. However, the only interpretation that all Biblical facts support is that the King David Jeremiah spoke about would be the Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, the very first verse of the New Testament clearly states that Jesus Christ is the Son of David. The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. There is ample proof in the New Testament that Jesus, as the son of David, was the King of the Jews. Even Pilate stated this when He wrote this and posted it on the cross of Calvary, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Returning to Jeremiah, he prophesied that the Jews in their restoration would serve King David which we proclaim to be Christ. Not literally David, just as John the Baptist was not literally the return of Elijah. But rather in his spirit, nature, office etc. Jesus is to the Jews that which David was in his life, their King.

Yet many of the Jewish faith do not now accept, or believe, that Jesus is David. After all, when He walked on earth He did not restore Israel to its former glory as the world power. But one day He will. When Christ was on earth the first time, at the beginning of the Gospel age, He came in the spirit of Joseph as the suffering Savior. The next time Jesus comes to earth bodily it will be in the office of David, the conquering warrior. Perhaps then, Israel will accept the Messiah as their King and will gladly serve Him. Of this Jeremiah told us, thousands of years ago.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
