Daily Reading: Jeremiah 26-29
Thus saith the LORD; Stand in the court of the LORD'S house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD'S house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word:
In Jeremiah’s day there were prophets sent of God who were faithful to the Lord’s message. Also, in Jeremiah’s day there were false prophets who brought forth messages of their own imagination. In this section of the book of Jeremiah both are presented.
The question is often asked; Why does God allow false prophets and or preachers? In the pages of Scripture there are two direct answers to these questions. One is all the way back in Deuteronomy 13:1-3
If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
One reason then that the Lord allows false prophets is to prove whether an individual would love the Lord with all of their heart and soul.
The other clear-cut Scripture is found in the New Testament book of I Corinthians. The Apostle Paul wrote this in 11:19 of that book: For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. Through allowing false teachings of false preachers today the Lord makes manifest, or shows forth, those who are true preachers. New Testament believers, from the time the canon of Scripture was completed have a far easier way to know truth from falsehood. They have the Scriptures in totality. They can search them daily to see if that which is preached is true or false. This is the duty of each individual. In Jeremiah’s day there was no printed copy of God’s Word meaning the people would have to exercise faith based upon contemporaneous proofs. Which is why the Lord allowed such things as Jeremiah prophesying Hananiah’s death which took place just a few months after being foretold.
These two reasons, to prove the love of God’s in one’s heart, and to manifest the truth by being contrasted with the false, is why God allows false prophets and preachers in every age.
Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
