Minding Your Thoughts
A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life
I Corinthians 14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
A bold statement no doubt! But it brings us face to face with a truth that must not be overlooked.
If a person is a prophet (one who speaks for God, today we would call these preachers) or spiritual then they will acknowledge that the things contained in the Bible are the commandments of God. However, there are many today who claim to be prophets or spiritual that do not believe there even is a Word of God, therefore no commandment of God. Of course, Paul makes this statement about this letter to this one church, but the principle easily can be extrapolated to the entirety of Scripture.
If a person thinks that they are a prophet, or spiritual, they should apply this test of Scripture. What do they believe about the writings of Paul: are they suggestions, mere wisdom of a man, or are they the commandments of the Lord? This is the test, the Scriptural test to prove oneself. Unfortunately, there are many today who consider that they are prophets, or spiritual, but they reject Paul’s teachings as the commandments of the Lord. According to this verse they are neither a prophet nor spiritual.
Also, there is more to this verse than self-examination. It is also a verse that instructs any child of God to identify those who are actually prophets and or those who are truly spiritual. What do they believe about the things that Paul wrote in this letter, and or the balance of the Word of God for that matter? Using this as a test for those who claim such will protect your mind from being tricked. And protecting your mind is as vital as feeding your mind. But that is a thought for another day.
May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
